11/10/2019 6:30:00 PMFidelis Quartet + Piano Rodica Gonzalez and the Fidelis Quartet (comprised of four musicians from the Houston Symphony) are back along with pianist Ilgin Aka to bring us another great program. We have heard them perform Schubert's "Death and the Maiden" string quartet and Dvorak's piano quintet (both of which they subsequently performed at Carnegie Hall) as well as the Schumann, Brahms and Franck piano quintets. ……………………………………………………………… Rodica holds a very dear position with the Woodlands Salon Series as her trio performed the first salon concert held in the music room. For this concert, Fidelis is bringing beloved pianist Ilgin Aka to perform some of chamber music's most melodic repertoire - the piano quintet. ………………………………………………………………… This concert is on a Sunday. Cheese, crackers and wine will be served at 6:30, the concert will start a bit after 7:00 and we will conclude with dessert after the concert.
1/19/2020 6:30:00 PMBrinton Smith (Cello) / Evelyn Chen (Piano) This evening brings back two stellar musicians: Cellist Brinton Averil Smith and Pianist Evelyn Chen. ……………………………………………………………… Brinton Averil Smith joined the Houston Symphony in the fall of 2005 as principal cellist. Prior to this, he was a member of the New York Philharmonic, and was also previously the principal cellist of the San Diego and Fort Worth Symphony Orchestras. Mr. Smith is a member of the faculty at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University and has also served as a professor at Teachers College, Columbia University. An active chamber musician, Brinton has collaborated with members of the Beaux Arts Trio and the Guarneri, Emerson, Juilliard, Cleveland, and Berg quartets, as well as performances with The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the New York Philharmonic Chamber Series and, with violinist Gil Shaham, at the Aspen Music Festival Winter recital series and the Linton series in Cincinnati. In addition to his 2013 concert with Evelyn Chen, we saw Brinton lead the Bad Boys of Cello concert on 1/20/2012. ………………………………………………………………. The New York Times hailed Evelyn Chen as "a pianist to watch," praising her "brilliant technique, warm, clear tone, and exacting musical intelligence." Ms. Chen's recent engagements have included performances on five continents at venues including Avery Fisher Hall and Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Recital Hall, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Wolf Trap, the Phillips Collection in Washington DC, the Mozarteum in Salzburg, the National Concert Hall in Taipei, the Cultural Center of Hong Kong, and the Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow. Her recording of Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2 and Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini with Leonard Slatkin and the Philharmonia Orchestra of London on BMG, was among the top ten best-selling classical recordings in England. Selected as a Steinway Artist, Ms. Chen has been featured on the CBS Evening News, and her performances have been broadcast by the National Public Radio, WGBH (Boston), WQXR (New York), WNYC (New York), WNCN (New York), WFMT (Chicago), and WGTS (Washington DC), as well as throughout Taiwan. ……………………………………………………………… Brinton Smith and Evelyn Chen both received their Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the Juilliard School. ……………………………………………………………… This concert is on a Sunday. Cheese, crackers and wine will be served at 6:30, the concert will start a bit after 7:00 and we will conclude with dessert after the concert.
4/19/2020 6:30:00 PMEric Halen / Scott Holshouser As is our tradition, we conclude the season with our favorite pair of musicians, Eric Halen (Co-Concertmaster of the Houston Symphony) and Scott Holshouser (Principal Keyboard of the Houston Symphony). Eric and Scott's recitals at the Woodlands Salon Series have consistently drawn some of our largest audiences. ………………………………………………………………… We last saw Eric and Scott at our 100th concert celebration. ………………………………………………………………… This concert is on a Sunday. Cheese, crackers and wine will be served at 6:30, the concert will start a bit after 7:00 and we will conclude with dessert after the concert.
